If you've moved to Elizabeth or Elbert County recently from a more urban area, snow removal out here works a bit differently than what you might expect. Here's what experienced Elbert County homeowners know about getting great snow service.
Service Windows: What's Realistic
On a moderate snowfall night (4โ6 inches), a professional snow plow service will typically service your driveway within 4โ8 hours of the storm ending or reaching trigger depth. For early morning commuters, many providers start routes between 4โ5am to ensure driveways are clear before the workday.
On major storm events (12+ inches), service windows extend. Your provider may need to service all customers in multiple passes โ a first pass to open driveways, a second pass to clean up edges and accumulated pushback. This is normal and expected. On severe storm days, communicate with your provider early rather than late.
Trigger Depth: The 2-Inch Rule
Most residential snow removal contracts in Elbert County use a 2-inch trigger depth โ meaning your driveway gets plowed once snow accumulates to 2 inches. Some contracts use 1 inch (more pushes, higher cost) or 3 inches.
During light dustings of under 2 inches, don't expect a visit. A dusting usually compacts into a thin ice layer from tire traffic, which is better handled by ice melt than plowing. Your contract will specify the trigger.
Gravel Driveways: What to Expect
Most rural Elbert County properties have gravel or dirt driveways. Snow plowing gravel is different from plowing asphalt:
- โข The blade rides higher (1โ2 inches above the surface) to avoid displacing gravel
- โข A thin layer of snow/slush is intentionally left to act as a "packing" layer over the gravel โ this is normal and by design
- โข Gravel plowing takes longer and requires more care than asphalt, which is reflected in pricing
- โข Spring grading to redistribute any displaced rock is a common follow-on service
Before the first storm, mark any obstacles in your driveway: propane fill pipes, low-head yard lights, invisible fence wire markers, soft shoulders. Stakes (orange snow stakes) are your best friend โ install them in October.
Where Does the Snow Go?
On a standard driveway push, snow is windrowed to one or both sides of the driveway. Discuss with your provider in advance where you want snow placed โ away from the garage door, away from a specific gate, not blocking a mailbox. Good providers ask these questions before the season; great ones remember the answers without being reminded.
On large storm events when the sides are already piled high from previous pushes, your provider may need to push snow further into your yard. As long as it's on your property, this is standard practice.
What's Typically NOT Included
Standard residential snow contracts usually cover the main driveway. These are common add-ons:
- โข Front walkway to the door (+$15โ$25/push)
- โข Porch or deck clearing
- โข Salt or ice melt application
- โข Pushing snow around a vehicle that was left in the driveway (most contracts require the driveway to be clear of vehicles)
